Maangere now has its very own planting guide, thanks to a collaboration between between Kāinga Ora, local mana whenua Te Ahiwaru and Te Aakitai, local community organisation ME Family Services and Māori ecology specialists Uru Whakaaro. The guide is an outcome of the Maangere Ngahere Project, which has been running for the past two years, and aims to grow and restore the ngahere in Maangere.
The purpose of the guide is to set down values and guiding principles, as expressed by mana whenua, in the delivery of community aspirations for ngahere across Ngaa Hau o Maangere. The guide can be used as a resource for anyone wanting to do planting in our area, including residents, schools, community groups, marae, churches, businesses and developers. The guide aims to step the reader through the process of decision making for selecting the right tree, for the right place, to improve the rate of success.
“Its so amazing to have such a beautiful book that focuses on the taiao of Maangere”, says Justine Skilling, manager of the Taiao Team at ME Family Services. “We’re so priveleged to be part of this project and see this guide as a way that all of us in Maangere can contribute to the maunga to moana regeneration of our ngahere.”
